Yes folks, those PC tools are at it again. Now that want to rename / co name Mt Panorama.......

This is the thin end of the wedge. :soap:

UPDATE: Bathurst Aboriginal Land Council CEO Toni-Lee Scott has responded to public unrest over the Mount Panorama co-naming plan, saying “nothing is going to change”.

Ms Scott said the stone ‘Mount Panorama’ sign would not be altered or replaced, and that the co-naming was aimed at preserving the Aboriginal language.

That hasn’t stopped an online petition from those against “co-naming/renaming” Mount Panorama.

Bathurst City Council will move to gazette the name ‘Wahluu’, to recognise the Aboriginal title from the Wiradjuri people for the city’s iconic Mount Panorama.

Mayor Gary Rush revealed the plans during this week’s Ordinary Council Meeting, in response to an unusual notice of motion tabled by outspoken Councillor Jess Jennings.

Cr Jennings’ motion concerned the Racial Discrimination Act at a Federal Government level, prompting Mayor Rush to reveal Council’s plans to co-name ‘The Mountain’.

“[A] very, very significant thing we are doing as a council is moving ahead with the co-naming of Mount Panorama with its indigenous name, Wahluu,” Mayor Rush said, speaking with Fairfax.

“There’s no more iconic way for this council to lend its support to this inclusive community we all seek. We have a policy to adopt the co-naming of Mount Panorama and I am certain that this council’s position is we do not tolerate racism in any way, shape or form.”

Bathurst’s famous Mount Panorama is known the world over for its large white stone sign embedded into the side of the mountain and its 6.2km ribbon of tarmac.

Originally referred to as “Bald Hills” by the locals, then-Mayor Griffin commissioned the road as a scenic drive offering tourists an inspiring view of Bathurst and its surrounds, which quickly showed potential as a venue for world-class motorsport events.

The annual Bathurst 1000 endurance event needs no introduction, while the growing status of the Bathurst 12-Hour gives race drivers at least two reasons to visit Bathurst each year.

Beyond ‘recognising’ Mount Panorama as Wahluu under the co-naming arrangement, it is unclear exactly how far Council will go to inform the public of the additional name.

Co-naming plans for The Mountain’s own icons – such as Reid and McPhillamy Parks – are also unclear, although Mayor Rush made no mention of these during this week’s meeting.

Cr Jennings’ motion received mixed responses from other councillors, many of whom believed the Council meeting was an inappropriate platform to debate Federal Government issues.

Mount Panorama/Wahluu may soon be recognised for a second ‘ribbon of tarmac’, as plans for a second and more ‘purpose-built’ race track gain momentum.

One question would they bother if it wasn't a world famous race track?

Maybe if governments spent more time governing instead of spending plenty of our money and time thinking of how to be politically correct this country may be a better place.

Had to have a google search on the mayor. Last time I looked the sprintcar legend wasnt running Bathurst, although I have herd rumors of Bathurst getting a speedway soon. Even more reason to visit the place, no matter what they want to call it.

Mount Panorama becomes 'Wahluu' in move backed by Bathurst race organisers

Mount Panorama will officially also now be known as Wahluu after the NSW Geographical Names Board approved a dual name for Australia's iconic race track.

Both Wahluu and Mount Panorama are, as of last week, recorded in the Geographical Names Register as tandem names, ending a 40-year campaign by the Wiradyuri people – and wider Aboriginal community – to have their name for the land formally recognised.

Geographical Names Board Chairman, Des Mooney, said the changes did not pave the way for one name to take precedence over the other. "It does however allow either name to be used," he said.

Wahluu means young man's initiation place. Wiradyuri elder, Dinawan Dyirribang, also known as Bill Allen, said the decision was "an important acknowledgement of Aboriginal tradition and history", which was welcomed by the Wiradyuri Council of Elders. "This was a longtime dream of the elders in the past that has been carried forward by today's elders," he said, adding the decision was "not about ownership" but about "connection with country and sharing the knowledge of Wahluu".

"Wahluu has been the name for thousands of years," he said.

Tongue in cheek, Mr Dyirribang added it was also used today by a number of other tribes "including Ford and Holden", who descend on the land every October and February.

Prior to the more recent racing-related chapter in the land's rich history, the story passed down through generations of the Wiradyuri people is that Wahluu was the name of a young warrior killed by his older brother, Ganhabula, in a dispute over a young unmarried woman.

"He fell ... blood flowed over the ground and into the cracks of the Earth which then made Biame [Wiradyuri word for God] very angry," said Mr Dyirribang.

"He made a volcano erupt and lava spewed out, flowing over Wahluu's body. This is the shape of the mountain as it stands today. This is a moral story about jealousy and envy and how wrong it is to kill."

The proposal for the historic dual name was submitted by the Bathurst Local Aboriginal Land Council but was the subject of numerous complaints by local residents in the lead-up to Bathurst Regional Council providing its endorsement, last November. The application also received the support of organisers behind both the Bathurst 1000 and Bathurst 12 Hour races.

Dual naming of geographical areas is not uncommon with the most famous example, within Australia, being Uluru/Ayers Rock.

Like i said before no one here today was here 200 years ago so the people of today are not responsible for what was taken back then.
We all should just move on and make the country better and renaming isnt it.

Thinking back to the gold old days at the top of the mountain I see.

The country must be in a fantastic position if this is one of the major issues for council to worry about.
