Holden hots up the Chevrolet SS

Magnetic ride control and manual transmission in the pipeline for US-exported Commodore.

Holden buyers could benefit from changes being flagged for the Australian-produced Chevrolet SS when the updated VF Commodore hits showrooms in the coming months.

According to reports, General Motors has given the green light to the US-exported Chevy SS scoring magnetic ride control and a manual transmission in its next generation, before production of both Australian and overseas variants are wound up in 2016. The updates could mean magnetic ride control becomes an option on flagship variants of the VF Commodore as Holden will already have the relevant infrastructure and capabilities to install it (the technology is currently only available on the HSV GTS).

The updated Series II VF Commodore could arrive as soon as this year to counter the introduction of the new Ford Falcon.

Holden has already hinted that paddle shifters, a shark fin antenna and the more powerful 6.2-litre V8 found in the Chevrolet SS could find their way into the Series II VF Commodore. A spokesman for the car maker declined to comment on any future product updates.

The mid-life changes to the Chevrolet SS have been designated in a bid to improve the sales of the car, in line with the predicted 3000-5000 units a year.

“The SS is performing as expected here in the US,” a Chevrolet spokeswoman told Drive.

“We have sold more than 1000 around the country since the car arrived in dealer showrooms at the end of last year.”

Fairfax Media believes the updates to the Chevrolet SS will take effect when the MY 2015 car begins arriving from the Australian spring. The last shipment of MY 2014 cars will land in the US towards the end of May.

“US Chevrolet Dealers will be able to order 2015 MY SS Sedans in the fall when the normal model year change over happens,” the Chevrolet spokeswoman said.

The Chevy SS follows export programs for the VE Commodore, which was sold as the Pontiac G8, and the Monaro, which sold as the Pontiac GTO. Holden has previously said shipments of the Chevrolet SS from Australia to the US would now be "ongoing" until the car maker's closure in 2016.

Initial US media impressions of the SS anointed it as the "Rear-drive thunder from Down Under", however the car has been criticised for its lack of manual transmission and brash styling and interior.
