The machines best suited to a high speed delivery run.

Santa has a huge job to do each year, delivering millions of presents to people across the world in a single night. A sleigh pulled by magical reindeer is the obvious answer to his transport troubles, but what if Santa had to travel by road?

In no particular order, here are five cars that could help the jolly man quickly get his toys where they need to be.

1 - HSV Clubsport R8 Tourer

Santa’s six white boomers are no match for the eight thunderous cylinders under the bonnet of the HSV Clubsport R8 Tourer.

With 325kW and 550Nm, it’s the most potent wagon Australia has ever made, combining plenty of go with ample storage. For a home grown alternative to the sleigh, it’s hard to go past HSV’s special wagon.

2 - FPV pursuit ute

Some presents won’t fit in the back of a wagon, so Santa might consider an Australian ute to fulfil his requirements. Powered by a supercharged 5.0-litre V8, the FPV Pursuit ute makes 315kW and 545Nm - more than enough to deliver the goods in time for Christmas morning. And the tray's big enough for a nap when he's done and needs to rest.

3- Audi RS6

When Santa needs real speed - the sort that would see an F/A18 Superhornet sidelined - just one car will do. Audi’s RS6 has a fire-breating twin-turbo V8 that makes 412kW and 700Nm, enough to slingshot the practical wagon from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds, and onto a top speed of 305km/h. No other car in Australia can match the RS6’s combination of space and pace.

4 - Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport is not the fastest car on this list, but it’s definitely the most comfortable, and arguably the most stylish too. With a suave sophistication that few cars can match, the Range Rover is also capable of going further off road than conventional fast wagons, and its smooth ride will not spill his cookies and milk.

5 - Lamborghini Urus

There are plenty of fast SUVs on sale, but none are likely to match the Lamborghini Urus when it arrives after 2014. The brand’s second SUV will blend edgy styling with scintillating performance that may be derived from a tuned version of the RS6’s V8. Lamborghini’s SUV is not on sale yet, but Santa should start saving now if he wants to be able to pay for the privilege of driving what should be the world’s fastest SUV, a car that is likely to cost more than $300,000 in Australia.
