The car that can hit 600km/h

A car that can hit 600km/h is just around the corner … if you believe anything British niche supercar maker Keating says.

Keating claims ‘The Bolt’ supercar will be capable of leaving the Bugatti Veyron in its dust, hitting 0.5 Mach - half the speed of sound, or 612km/h - after accelerating from 0-100km/h in just 2.0 seconds. That would easily make it the fastest production car on earth.

Powered by a highly modified version of a Chevrolet LS7 V8 engine - the same base 7.0-litre powerplant used in the HSV W427, which is also fitted to the Hennessey Venom GT - Keating’s top-end twin-turbocharged model can reportedly pump out between 1000 and 2500 brake horsepower, or 746kW as a minimum and 1864kW at the maximum.

The engine is believed to be sourced from Nelson Racing Engines in the US, which specialises in building motors for dragracers. The company says the engine is so powerful it’s hard to find a car with a chassis that can cope with it, and says the engine can run four seasons without a rebuild. That translates to about 12 minutes of full-power before it needs to be refurbished.

A toned-down 477kW prototype version of the car was shown at the University of Bolton over the weekend, with a marketing brochure making numerous outlandish claims about the performance of the car.

“Depending on individual customer needs, speed aspiration and power requirements, Keating can take you from a heart thumping 230mph+ (370km/h) to an astronomical and out-of-this-world 0.5 Mach (340mph!),” the brochure states. Someone should let them know 0.5 Mach is actually 380mph.

‘The Bolt’ is apparently constructed using “space-age and lightweight materials’”, with a kerb weight of between 990 and 1200 kilograms - about the same as the average city car.

Respected UK magazine Autocar was at the reveal of the prototype, and it reported the car had more than a few rough edges, drawing into question the seriousness of the brand’s campaign to potentially offer the fastest production car in the world.

“[It] sounds exactly like a car that's bolted, nailed and glued together by a handful of people in a shed on a farm,” Autocar quips.

Keating says the car will be priced from £750,000 ($1.28 million).

I would rather build a new home and with the money left over build a car I could drive when ever I felt like it.
